Remote DBA - An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Posted by Michael Corey on Tue, Nov 20, 2007 @ 07:08 PM

My first inspiration to develop a Remote Database Administration service (Remote DBA) came in the late 1980’s. I was running a very successful consulting company by the name of Database Technologies. As a side note David Teplow founded Database Technologies and it was the first relational consulting company in Boston even before Oracle consulting services. David and I at the time had a very successful consulting operation growing incredibly fast. It was 3 a.m. in the morning, and I could not sleep. The growing pains of the business were keeping me awake. I went down stairs to get a drink of water. As I turned on the faucet, I thought to myself it just works. Why don’t my databases just work.

As I thought about database technology, when I first started working with Oracle databases there were 3 books for everything. Today you could fill a wall full of books from Oracle Corporation on just how to use the database. You could fill a second wall full of books, from authors like myself just to help you understand the first set of books. It was clear to me that database technology was getting more and more complex even back then.

As I thought about the size of the databases we were managing, they were getting bigger and bigger at an alarming rate. A recent study I read, states that the amount of information being stored in a databases grows 3-5 times its size every 3 years.

It was clear to me then, as it is today. Databases are getting bigger and bigger and more and more complex. Anything that is big and complex needs experts. So I took this idea into my management team at Database Technologies. They all looked at me like I had 4 heads. As I thought about the business David and I were growing. It had grown over 5000% percent in a few years, and as much as I thought Remote Database Administration was a great idea. Now was not the time to distract a very successful consulting company with it. Back then I knew Remote Database Administration time had come. With all the changes in the market place today, the need for Remote Database Administration today is even more critical today.

I also saw a recent article by Michael Corey in Database Trends and Applications Magazine. Beyond doubt, remote DBA is the way to go, to sleep better at night. You have the expertise in the field, just a phone call away. Several years back, we contracted Ntirety to monitor 3 production databases. It freed up our time to focus on development work. At the time of upgrading to new versions, we got all the help we needed. Even when there is a small glitch or a hung-up sql statement, the issue is taken care of and we also get notified. Ntirety's portal gives us good traceability to our db issues.
